In this time of isolation, we’ve all distanced ourselves from each other. So think of this as a letter to you, found in a bottle that floated thousands of miles, and a hundred oceans just to reach you.
You’ve got a thousand pictures of yourself as a kid, all those stupid haircuts, that one party where your mum said you look extra handsome or pretty, but let’s be honest the outfit sucked. In that photo you see someone who used to be your best friend, your neighbour, your role model, your first love.
You think of all the things they accomplished, all the good they brought into this world, and how they grew without you around, and vice versa. As time passed, you forgot about them, and you brought new people into your life. You wonder if they did the same. Did they ever do the things they set out to do? Did they get their fairy tale wedding? Are they happy?
I’ve often revisited my past, and that’s where I find a lot of the inspiration for my music. After going through many moments in my own past, I managed to find many pictures with people I’d forgotten along the way, and many people that made me happy. One such memory was a picture with my friend Madeline, at my mum’s very first art exhibition, more than 24 years ago. We were neighbours and looking at the image I thought about all that she might’ve become in the time that we spent apart.
This is a simple song, from my bedroom, to your ears. A simple letter, knowing that while you’re not around, you’re always fondly remembered. May this distance bring us, ever closer together.
lyrics
Dear Madeline
Do You wander close?
Or far sometimes?
Will you hold me close?
Dear Madeline
How does this go deep?
Do we fall aline?
On the day We meet
Dear Madeline
Would you follow me
Like you were mine
With every day that passes
Along the haze
Isn’t it natural
Hardly waiting for answers
Beyond my age
Isn’t it natural?
Complicated
Nobody waited
Where were you taken?
Dear Madeline
No one’s spoken
I wish you were broken
Left without aching
Dear Madeline
Did you call on me?
When you were mine
Where the flowers meet
Are we dandelions?
Where the whispers sleep?
On the silent isles
I’ll be waiting there
Dear Madeline
Don’t forget me there
Dear Madeline
Come and play
With a chance
To win the rain
Isn’t it Natural?
Would you save
Me a dance?
I’m on my way
Isn’t it natural?
Sail away
Sail away, little child
I’m awake
When your dreams turn you down
Have no fear
Like I said when you dream
I’m awake
I’m awake
Complicated
Nobody waited
Where were you taken?
Dear Madeline
No one’s spoken
I wish you were broken
Left without aching
Dear Madeline
